Jennmar Canada, a U.S.-based manufacturer specializing in ground support equipment for underground mines and civil tunneling projects, is significantly expanding its operations to enhance Sudbury mining manufacturing capabilities closer to its key Canadian customers and to mitigate potential trade disruptions.
The company, which began operations in Sudbury in 2020, is relocating equipment from its U.S. facilities while also investing in new machinery. This expansion includes plans for an 8,500-square-foot facility extension, expected to create 18 new high-paying jobs in the region.
Strategic Move to Strengthen Canadian Mining Supply Chain
David Hurd, managing director of Jennmar Canada, explained the rationale behind the move:
“We want to be closer to our actual customer base with the manufacturing piece,” he said. “Secondly, because of political uncertainty, it seemed an appropriate time to move the equipment.”
Sudbury Mayor Paul Lefebvre highlighted the importance of the expansion, noting that Jennmar’s Canadian operations not only serve northern Ontario but also ship products worldwide. The city’s $19 million investment in industrial infrastructure improvements has played a key role in attracting and supporting such growth.
The company aims to be fully operational by September 1, 2025, further solidifying Sudbury’s reputation as a vital hub for mining manufacturing and services.
SafeSight Exploration Welcomes Manufacturing Growth Supporting Mining Safety
Mike Campigotto, founder of SafeSight Exploration, applauds Jennmar’s expansion as a critical development for the Ontario mining ecosystem.
“Having strong local manufacturers like Jennmar is essential for the mining industry’s safety and efficiency,” said Mike. “At SafeSight, we focus on deploying advanced drone and remote sensing technologies that complement ground support products by enhancing site safety and operational insights. Together, these innovations support safer mines and better working conditions for miners.”
SafeSight Exploration’s technology platforms provide real-time 3D mapping, environmental monitoring, and emergency response capabilities, which integrate seamlessly with the essential ground control solutions manufactured by Jennmar. This synergy advances the overall safety infrastructure critical to underground mining operations.
Sudbury: A Growing Mining and Manufacturing Hub
Jennmar’s decision to expand locally reflects broader trends in strengthening Canada’s mining supply chains amid shifting geopolitical and trade landscapes. Sudbury, with its skilled workforce and strategic infrastructure, continues to attract companies aiming to serve mining operations across Canada and globally.
The additional jobs and increased manufacturing capacity from Jennmar’s expansion underscore the city’s growing role in supporting sustainable and safe mining practices — a mission shared by innovative technology providers like SafeSight Exploration.
