Canadian mining company New Gold Inc. (TSX: NGD; NYSE American: NGD) has announced the acquisition of the remaining 19.9% free cash flow interest in its flagship New Afton copper-gold mine from the Ontario Teachers’ Pension Plan. The $300 million transaction gives New Gold full economic control over one of the country’s key underground mining assets, located approximately 10 km west of Kamloops, British Columbia.
“This transaction allows New Gold to fully consolidate the free cash flow exposure to one of Canada’s highest quality gold/copper assets, which we already own and operate,” stated Patrick Godin, President and CEO of New Gold. “New Afton is on the verge of exceptional production growth and cost improvement that should lead to increased free cash flow generation.”
Shares of New Gold rose 4.2% on the Toronto Stock Exchange following the announcement, reaching $4.45 per share and bringing the company’s market capitalization to $3.38 billion.
Strategic Implications for the Mining Sector
New Afton is recognized as a high-quality underground operation with a strong reserve base, established infrastructure, and expansion potential. Full ownership simplifies management, improves strategic agility, and positions New Gold to optimize operations and capital deployment more effectively.
This transaction also aligns with a broader trend among Canadian mining companies toward operational streamlining and long-term asset development, particularly in response to growing global demand for copper and gold.
SafeSight Exploration: A New Era for Mining Innovation
The consolidation of ownership at New Afton provides an ideal foundation for accelerating the adoption of advanced mining technologies. From the standpoint of SafeSight Exploration, a Canadian leader in underground mining innovation, this development presents significant opportunities for integration of autonomous systems, 3D mapping, and enhanced emergency response solutions.
“With a single operator in control, the pathway for innovation becomes more direct,” said Mike Campigotto, President of SafeSight Exploration. “Technologies like drones for inspection, LiDAR-based 3D mapping, and rapid-response systems can be scaled more effectively when long-term planning is supported by full asset control.”
SafeSight’s suite of tools—including the DB4 LiDAR drone, SafeScoutemergency response drone, and Rescue Wheel rapid extraction system—are well-suited to mines like New Afton that require continuous, safe, and efficient underground operations.

A Turning Point for Canada’s Mining Future
As Canada continues to evolve into a global hub for sustainable resource development, partnerships between asset owners and technology innovators will be key. New Gold’s full ownership of New Afton not only signals confidence in the future of Canadian mining but also underscores the importance of modernizing underground operations through smart, scalable, and safety-driven technologies.
SafeSight Exploration remains committed to supporting the Canadian mining industry’s transition to a more efficient, autonomous, and resilient future.
